Sioux City Explorers News Release
WICHITA, KS -- Alexander Francisco allowed just 4 hits over 9 scoreless innings and won his 5th game in his 5th start as the Explorers pushed 3 runs across in the top of the 10th to earn a split with Wichita 3-1 in 10 innings Monday night.
Francisco was magnificent on the hill for the X's, allowing just one man to third base all night long, and that was Kevin Hooper in the first inning. Stephen Pearson had 2 hits off the righty and Brenan Herrera had an infield hit.
Sioux City, meanwhile, had base runners on all night long but couldn't get any of them in. The X's left the bases loaded in the 2nd off of wild Wingnut starter Ronnie Ball. Sioux City stranded 8 men through the first 7 innings.
Francisco allowed a 1 out walk in the bottom of the 9th to Michael Thompson and the Wingnuts 3B moved to 2nd on a wild pitch but Francisco struck out David Gates and Heath Keel to end the threat.
In the top of the 10th, Wichita went to RHP Doug Hurn instead of their closer Byron Embry and Luke Hetherington started the rally with a 1 out walk. Chris Grossman and Juan Camacho followed with back-to-back singles, Camacho's hit scored Hetherington to make it 1-0. Alex Llanos followed with a bouncer and Grossman collided with Felipe Del Rosario at the plate and ruled safe to make it 2-0. Out came Hurn, in came Embry. Chad Gabriel would get a fly ball deep enough to score Camacho and the X's had a 3-0 lead.
Brett Reid ran into trouble in the bottom of the 10th, giving up a leadoff walk to Stephen Pearson and then Herrera doubled down the left field line. Reid would strike out Felipe Del Rosario but uncorked a wild pitch to allow Pearson to score, the first run allowed by Reid all season. Reid would recover to strike out Chris Colton but would walk Kevin Hooper, putting the potential tying run on base. Reid would strike out pinch-hitter Derek Schermerhorn to end the game and give the X's their first extra-inning win this season.
Francisco is now a perfect 5-0 and Reid notched his 6th save. Chris Grossman went 3-5 with a 1 run, extending his hit streak to 9 games. Sam Walker went 2-3 with a walk. Chad Gabriel's hitting streak ended at 11.
Sioux City now heads home to begin a 6 game homestand. Shreveport comes to town Tuesday night to start a 3 game set. Tim Layden will get the start for the X's while Shreveport has yet to announce their starter. Game time at Lewis & Clark Park is 7:05 and tickets available by calling 277-WINS.
