Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jason Urquidez, who ranks has Lancaster's all-time saves leader, will be back in a Barnstormers uniform for a fourth season, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Urquidez, 32, passed Tim Hamulack for the number one spot on the Barnstormers' franchise saves list on September 18, 2014 with his 28th and last save of the season and 52nd of his career in Lancaster.
Overall, the right-hander has converted 52 of 57 regular season save opportunities with Lancaster. He originally joined the club in May, 2012 and went 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 15 appearances before being signed by the Boston Red Sox and assigned to Class AA Portland. The following year, he opened the season in Lancaster and went his first 30 innings without allowing an earned run. Urquidez was 3-1 with 24 saves and a 0.25 ERA in 2013, allowing only 19 hits and seven walks while striking out 48 in 36 innings of work before joining the Los Angeles Angels' Class AAA affiliate in Salt Lake City.
Following a winter season in which Urquidez helped Hermosillo win the Mexican Pacific League pennant and Mexico win the Caribbean World Series, the Arizona State product rejoined the Barnstormers May 15. He ended the season with a 3-2 record and a 2.37 ERA in 48 appearances. Urquidez added three saves in five post-season games.
With the Barnstormers, he has averaged 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings and has an overall ERA of 1.60. He has yielded only three home runs in 101 innings of work.
Prior to his arrival in Lancaster, Urquidez spent seven years in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, peaking at Class AAA. He had also been named to the Arizona State All-Decade Team for the 2000's.
"He's our closer," said manager Butch Hobson. "He's had some great years for us, and I really think we will see him back to his 2013 form this season."
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their eleventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
