Franchise Record Eighth Straight Win

The Calgary Vipers set a new franchise record for consecutive victories with a 13-11 win over the Yuma Scorpions at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. For the Vipers it was their eighth win in a row and improved their second half record to 2-0. Nelson Castro had the biggest hit of them all as in the seventh inning with his team down a run he smacked a three-run homer to give Calgary the lead for good. Castro also scored three runs while knocking in four to add to his league high runs batted in total of 53. Colin Moro also had a big night with three hits, five runs batted in, and two scored.

In his first appearance of the season Travis Hughes (1-0) picked up the victory throwing a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. Mac Suzuki (3) recorded the save in tossing the final two innings of the game and not giving up a run while striking out three. Dorian Castro (1-2) took the loss in surrendering the go-ahead home run to Castro.

Yuma took a big lead early in the first frame as Deivis Rivadeneira singled, Adolfo Gomez walked, Reynaldo Rodriguez reached on an error which also scored Rivadeneira, Carlos Villalobos doubled in two, and Carlos Balcazar singled in one for a 4-0 advantage.

It didn't take long for the Vipers to respond as in the bottom of the inning Fehlandt Lentini singled and Nelson Castro doubled him home. Jorge Mejia followed by reaching on an error, Colin Moro doubled home two runs, Drew Miller doubled, Caonabo Cosme plated one with a groundout, and Rick Guarno gave his team a 5-4 lead with a sacrifice fly.

Right back answered the Scorpions though in the next half inning as with two outs Rodriguez doubled, Villalobos singled him home, Ismael Castro singled, and with runners at the corners Castro got caught in a rundown between first and second base, but before the Vipers could tag him out Villalobos scored from third for a 6-5 lead.

A run was added by Yuma in the top of the fifth for a 7-5 score as Villalobos doubled, reached third on a Castro singled, and scored on a Carlos Pupo sacrifice fly.

The Snakes tied the game in the bottom of the frame as Castro singled, stole second base, scored on a Colin Moro double, Miller singled, and Cosme drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 7-7 game.

Yuma took their third lead of the game in the next half inning as Jonathan Lozada and Rivadeneira hit back-to-back doubles. Gomez followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt and reaching on an error on which Rivadeneira also scored on, and Castro drove in a third tally with a base hit for a 10-7 advantage.

Calgary got within one run in the bottom of the sixth as Buddy Morales and Lentini were hit by pitches, Mejia reached on an error, and Moro knocked in two more runs with a base hit for a 10-9 score.

In the top of the seventh the Scorpions increased their lead to 11-9 when Pupo singled, moved to second on a Diover Avila sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Lozada RBI base knock.

The Vipers once again got within one run in the bottom of the inning as Rick Guarno walked, Morales singled, and Dillon O'Krane plated a run with a base hit. With two runners on Castro belted his eighth big fly of the season to give his team their second lead of the game at 13-11.

This series continues on Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT. On Saturday is Movie Night as Sandlot will be shown on the big screen after the game and on Sunday it is Bark at the Park and Little League Day where fans can bring their dog to the game and all Little Leaguers get in for free at the Stadium.

Erik Dessau (4-1) and Joe Sergent (3-3) will start the two games for the Vipers. Dessau is also coming off a victory and his was a complete seven inning game allowing only one earned run while not walking a batter. Sergent on the other hand is coming off his fourth no-decision of the season after allowing two earned runs in six innings while striking out four his last time out. The left-hander is fifth in the league in both strikeouts (47) and earned run average (3.21).
