Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pa. - The Erie Otters outplayed one of the top teams in the CHL in the London Knights thanks to a three-point night from Dane Fox and another highlight reel goal by Connor McDavid. The Otters skated to a 4-3 win in front of 3,060 fans at Erie Insurance Arena Friday night.
The Otters struck first 3:13 into the game on the 10th goal of the season by Luke Cairns. Fox found Cairns streaking towards the net, and Cairns put in his own rebound under the right pad of Jake Patterson to make it 1-0.
Fox scored just under two minutes later to give Patterson an early exit from the game. Fox found a bouncing puck towards the right circle and lifted a backhand shot through the blocker of Patterson for his 11th goal of the season.
Anthony Stolarz came into the net for the Knights, who got on the board at 9:11 on a breakaway goal by Matt Rupert.
In the second period, the parade to the penalty box began for the Knights, as the Otters spent six straight minutes on the power play, including three two-man advantages. The Otters scored on the first of the five-on-threes when Dane Fox potted home his second goal of the game at 5:51.
Bo Horvat put the Knights within a goal as he scored his 25th goal of the season four minutes and 22 seconds into the third.
McDavid added insurance with six minutes and 27 seconds remaining in regulation with a goal that had the fans jumping out of their seats. McDavid took the puck from behind the net and danced towards the front of the net, softly going from forehand to backhand and tossing the puck off the glove side post for his 24th goal of the season.
The Knights quickly answered back 76 seconds later as they gambled with an empty net during a power play. Ryan Rupert banged in his ninth goal of the season with just over five minutes left to make it a one-goal game.
The net was empty during the final minute of regulation, but unlike the previous extra attacker situation, the Otters limited cycling by the Knights and held on to earn their second win against the OHL-best Knights this season.
