Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO - Chicago Sky center Sylvia Fowles has been named to the 2014 WNBA All- Defensive Second Team. Fowles received 17 points from a panel of the WNBA's 12 head coaches. Fowles, who has captured four WNBA All-Defensive First Team awards, earned the Second Team honor for the second time in her career as she propelled the Sky to back-to-back postseason appearances.
During the 2014 season, Fowles averaged a double-double with 13.4 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-6 center recorded five blocks on three separate occasions in 2014 to lead her team to over 200 blocks for the second consecutive season. The Chicago Sky is the first team in WNBA history to achieve 200-plus blocks in back-to-back seasons.
"Sylvia provides an invaluable presence in the paint," said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. "She protects the rim with her shot-blocking ability but she also provides an intimidation factor. It doesn't show up on the stat sheet but that fear-factor is large part of our success on the defensive end of the floor."
Fowles ranks first in total blocks among active players with 376 career blocks. She also ranks fourth all-time in career blocks per game (2.02) and second among all active players. The 2013 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year not only protected the basket, she also dominated the boards. Fowles recorded a season-high 17 rebounds on July 9 and tied her career high with 14 defensive rebounds on August 13.
Since her first game back on June 25, Fowles recorded seven double-double performances in a row, and 12 total double-doubles in only 20 games played. She ended the season ranked fifth in the WNBA in double-doubles. Fowles also recorded a career-high five steals against the Atlanta Dream on July 25.
Fowles is joined in the WNBA All-Defensive Second Team by Alana Beard of the Los Angeles Sparks (29 points), Tamika Catchings of the Fever (29 points), Danielle Robinson of the San Antonio Stars (27 points) and Maya Moore of the Minnesota Lynx (17 points).
A panel of the WNBA's 12 head coaches voted on the WNBA All-Defensive Team, selecting First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own teams. Players earned two points for each First Team vote and one point for a Second Team vote.
