AUGUSTA, GA - Bryan Mitchell tossed six innings of one-hit, shutout baseball to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 7-1 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in the final game of the RiverDogs' 2012 South Atlantic League season at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The victory allows the RiverDogs to end the 2012 season on a four-game winning streak and having won 10 of 11 to put their final record at 73-63 (34-35 in the second half). This is also the fourth straight season the RiverDogs have won their season finale. Augusta's fourth straight defeat leaves them with a record of 69-70 (37-33 in the second half).
Through six frames, Mitchell (9-11) was fantastic, closing out his season with a second consecutive great outing. The only hit he allowed was a seeing-eye single by Brett Krill to lead off the fourth inning. The right-hander did not walk a batter on the day and struck out six for his ninth win of the year. He finished his day by retiring the last nine men he faced.
Charleston's lineup didn't waste any time in grabbing the lead, as Saxon Butler, Rob Refsnyder and Casey Stevenson (2-3, RBI) all singled in runs in the first inning for a 3-0 lead. Casey McGehee tacked on another run off starter Paul Davis (6-8) in the second with an RBI double.
In the fifth, singles by Dante Bichette, Jr. (3-4, 2 runs) and Stevenson sparked another rally. When Francisco Arcia singled to right, a throwing error by right fielder Devin Harris plated both runners to stretch the lead to 6-0. Stevenson's single was his final hit of the season and gave him a season ending average of .300. Arcia drove in another run the seventh on a groundout for Charleston's final run of 2012.
Philip Wetherell relieved Bryan Mitchell to begin the seventh and allowed a run on an RBI single by Elliot Blair, but that was all the GreenJackets would get. Wetherell tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth for his seventh save, getting Blair to groundout to the mound for the final out of the final game of the 2012 season, securing the victory.
