FOURTEEN FLAMES CALDER CUP ALUMNI DRESSED IN NHL THIS SEASON

SAINT JOHN, NB – When Micki DuPont suited up for the Calgary Flames this weekend, he became the fourteenth member of the 2001 Calder Cup Champion Saint John Flames to appear in the National Hockey League this season. The list of the players and the NHL teams they appeared with during the 2001-02 include:

Steve Begin – Calgary Flames
Benoit Gratton – Montreal Canadiens
Blair Betts – Calgary Flames
Jason Botterill – Calgary Flames
Martin Brochu – Vancouver Canucks
Chris Clark – Calgary Flames
Micki DuPont – Calgary Flames
Rico Fata - New York Rangers
Steve Montador – Calgary Flames
Marty Murray – Philadelphia Flyers Dave Roche – New York Islanders
Gaetan Royer – Tampa Bay Lightning
Sergei Varlamov – St. Louis Blues Derrick Walser – Columbus Blue Jackets

Begin collected 12 points (7 goals, 5 assists) and 79 penalty minutes in 51 games with the Calgary Flames. Clark also skated with Calgary, recorded 17 points (10 goals, 7 assists) and 77 penalty minutes in 63 games. Varlamov collected 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) with 26 penalty minutes in 51 games with St. Louis Blues and Murray collected 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) and 10 penalty minutes in 72 games with the Philadelphia Flyers.

DuPont, Betts, Montador, Walser and Royer made their NHL debuts this season. Betts skated in five games with the Calgary Flames and recorded his first NHL goal on his first NHL shot in his first NHL game. Montador skated in ten games with Calgary and recorded one goal, the first of his NHL career, and two assists. DuPont, Walser and Royer made their debuts with Calgary, the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Tampa Bay Lightning respectively.

Botterill, Brochu, Fata, Gratton, and Roche each appeared in NHL games this season on recall assignments.

The Saint John Flames are the primary development organization of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames and have been a member of the American Hockey League since 1993.
