Four-Run Fourth Propels Swamp Bats over Blue Sox, 4-2

July 13, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

Bouncing back from last night's heartbreaking loss to North Adams, the Keene Swamp Bats defeated the Valley Blue Sox by a score of 4-2 on Sunday night.

The win moves the Swamp Bats back to .500 at 13-13 while the Blue Sox drop to 8-19 on the year.

Keene plated four runs in the top half of the fourth inning and that was all they would need.

Valley grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning as Frank Crinella (Merrimack) walked with one out, moved to third on a single and scored on a passed ball charged to Swamp Bats catcher Robbie Coman (Virginia).

The four-run fourth inning for Keene started with back-to-back singles from Coman and Aubrey McCarty (Vanderbilt). Both would score on a two-run triple by Bret Dennis (St. John's). Dennis came home on a sacrifice fly delivered by Ryan Summers (Louisville). Darrick Hall (Cochise), who singled, scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch charged to Blue Sox reliever Henry Van Zant (Bowdoin).

Valley would cut the lead to 4-2 in the home half of the seventh as Joseph Carcone (College of St. Rose) pinch ran for Jeremie Fagnan (TCU) following a single and Carcone scored on a wild pitch. That was the closest they would get however.

Connor Jones (Virginia) relieved Alec Bettinger (Virginia) and earned the win for Keene, lasting 3.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits, walking six and striking out five. Jones is now 1-0 on the season.

Bettinger got the start for the Swamp Bats tonight, lasting four innings and allowing one unearned run on three hits, walking one and striking out three.

Matt Clancy (St. John's) notched his first save of the season, coming on with first and second and one down in the eighth. The southpaw induced a 6-4-3 double play to end that frame and struck out a pair in the ninth for the five out save.

Daniel Starwalt (Stanford) was tagged with the loss for Valley, working 3.1 innings and giving up four runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Keene had 13 hits in the game. Coman and McCarty paced the offense with three hits apiece.

The Swamp Bats are off tomorrow and will be back in action Tuesday night at Alumni Field, taking on the Newport Gulls at 6:30 p.m.
