Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back in defeating the Tucson Toros 8-4 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. Calgary scored another three runs in the eighth inning to add some insurance after the Toros had closed to within three runs at 5-2. Joe Sergent (1-0) recorded his first win with a quality start as he tossed six and a third innings while allowing only four hits for two runs and striking out six. The lefty also went one-for-three at the plate and collected his first ever professional base hit.

After two runs had scored for Tucson in the seventh inning Daniel Buller came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and protected his team's three-run lead by recording the final two outs of the inning.

At the plate Drew Miller led the charge by going two-for-four, including a triple, while also scoring three runs. Julio Ramirez collected his second home run of the season with his two-run shot.

The Vipers wrap up the season opening seven game road trip in Tucson on Tuesday May 25th at 8:00 PM MDT.

Opening Day at Foothills Stadium is scheduled for Thursday May 27th at 7:00 PM MDT with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.

Tickets are currently on sale at the Vipers' office (2255 Crowchild Trail NW), you can also call 403-277-2255 or visit the Calgary Vipers' website: www.calgaryvipers.com.
