Four-Goal First Pushes Wheat Kings Past Edmonton
November 22, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
For the second game in a row against the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Brandon Wheat Kings got a four-goal period. And once again, it was enough to steer them to victory.
Nate Danielson and Charlie Elick scored twice each in the first period, and Nolan Flamand chipped in a single in the second to give the Wheat Kings a 5-3 win. Carson Bjarnason stopped 27 of 30 shots thrown his way.
"Our first period was pretty good," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "I thought we executed some plays and we got to the front of the net a few times and got rewarded. The first period was pretty sound."
Danielson led off the scoring parade in the first period with a clever bank shot. Catching Logan Cunningham out of his net playing a loose puck, Danielson stripped him, then bounced it off of him from below the goal line to put the Wheat Kings up 1-0.
The Oil Kings made good on a bounce of their own when a blocked shot dropped down in front of the Wheat Kings net and Roan Woodward shovelled it home to make it 1-1.
A more typical Danielson goal put the Wheat Kings back on top, however. Left alone at the bottom of the left circle, Danielson sniped home his second of the game and sixth of the season to restore the lead.
Then it was Elick's turn to get in on the action. First, he fired a shot from the right point that bounced its way past Cunningham. Then, joining the rush, he took the drop pass from Danielson and fired home a bullet from the top of the right circle.
The power play pulled the Oil Kings back into the game in the second, with Skyler Bruce parked at the mouth of the crease knocking home a slap pass from Marc Lajoie. Flamand put the Wheat Kings up 5-2, however, after Andrei Maliavin worked the puck down to him as he was by himself in the low slot.
Another power play goal got the Oil Kings back within two once again, this time a snapshot by Gavin Hodnett. But that was as close as the Oil Kings got, though they did throw a scare into the Wheat Kings in the third with an ultimately disallowed goal.
Next up for the Wheat Kings: a quick journey to Red Deer and a date with the Rebels on Friday night. Puck drop is 8:00 Manitoba time.
