August 19, 2023 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
Forward Madison FC News Release
Forward Madison FC began its three-game road streak in Georgia on Saturday, August 19th, facing South Georgia Tormenta FC for the third time this season. Forward Madison entered this match in fourth place in the USL League One standings, and South Georgia entered in eighth. The match kicked off just after 6:30pm CT.
In the opening minute, both sides came out with determination. In the fourth minute, Forward Madison striker Christian Chaney took a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and nearly missed the back of the net with a shot off the post. This opportunity set the tempo for the 'Mingos, who continued to press Tormenta's backline. In the 12th minute, Chaney was able to capitalize on a rebound off midfielder Jayden Onen's strike to put Forward Madison up 1-0. However, Tormenta put pressure on the FMFC backline, and in the 18th minute, they were able to equalize with an FMFC own goal, making the score 1-1. Forward Madison bounced back and continued to play composed after conceding. In the 26th minute, FMFC's backline found Chaney in the middle, who flicked it to an open Onen running behind Tormenta's backline. Onen took a touch and slotted into the far post to put the 'Mingos up 2-1. The score would remain for the rest of the half, with FMFC on top heading into the break.
South Georgia Tormenta opened the second half with momentum. In the 49th minute, Tormenta was awarded a penalty after an FMFC foul in the box. Striker Kazaiah Sterling stepped up and placed the shot past FMFC goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann to level the game again, 2-2. Within the next ten minutes, Tormenta scored two back-to-back goals to lead for the first time in the match, 4-2. Forward Madison made a few substitutions to bring some new energy to the pitch and continued to create opportunities in the final third. However, the new changes proved not enough to come back, and the match ended 4-2 in favor of South Georgia Tormenta FC.
