CRESTWOOD, IL (Friday, May 31, 2002) â The Cook County Cheetahs are proud to announce that effective tomorrow, Dana Forsberg will be the new manager for the Cook County Cheetahs. Chad Epperson will manage his final game as the manager tonight, before taking the position as hitting coach with the Boston Red Sox Class A Florida State league in Sarasota, Florida.
Forsberg announced his retirement today to become the new manager. "It's a great opportunity for me", said new skipper Forsberg. "After playing for five years under great managers, I have learned a lot and will take that tutelage and bring it to this team." Forsberg and Epperson are not strangers to each other. Both were a part of the Nashua Pride (Atlantic League) 2000 Championship season and came to the Cook County Cheetahs together in 2001. "Dana has the knowledge and he knows the league", said Epperson. "The team looks at Dana like a player /coach and like Dana said, it's the same ship, just a new skipper".
Epperson came to the Cheetahs in 2001 after playing with Nashua Pride (Atlantic League) in 2000 and winning the Atlantic League Championship. With 10 years of professional baseball experience (see bio), Epperson will be returning to the Red Sox organization were he played his 1997 and 1999 season. "I'm happy to be returning to the organization were I played and to be moving closer to my family". Epperson lives in Fort Myers during the off-season with his wife and son.
With the change in managers, DH Rick Stegbauer will move to first base and Sean Bischofberger will move in the DH position for tonight's game against the Otters.
