Former Yankees Farmhand Joy Signs With Beach Bums

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.-After spending the summer of 2008 in the New York Yankees organization, left-handed pitcher Shawn Joy has signed with the Traverse City Beach Bums for the 2009 season.
"Shawn is a versatile lefty who could either start or relieve this season," said Beach Bums director of baseball operations Jason Wuerfel. "He is a competitor on the mound and has pitched effectively at every level he has played. He has good stuff and we expect him to be very tough on Frontier League hitters this summer."
Joy pitched in the Gulf Coast League for the Gulf Coast Yankees in Tampa, Fla. last summer, appearing in team-high 15 games and totaling 19 2/3 innings of work, recording four saves, striking out nine batters, and ending with a 1-1 record. The Topeka, Kansas native was signed as a free agent by the Yankees following his collegiate finale in June.
The southpaw pitched collegiately at Southern Illinois University after spending two seasons at Cloud County Community College in Kansas. At SIU, Joy racked up an 11-5 record with career totals of 97 strikeouts in 31 starts with three complete games and a shutout. At CCCC, he had a career earned-run average of 3.59 and 41 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.
The 5-11, 185-pound pitcher is the son of Allen and Jane Joy. Joy will report to Beach Bums spring training in early May and will enter the season as a Rookie-2 according to Frontier League regulations.
The Beach Bums open their 2009 home slate on May 26 against the Southern Illinois Miners at 7:05 p.m. at Wuerfel Park.
