Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Miners have announced the re-signing of relief pitcher Mike Phelps. The former Cubs prospect joined the Miners on July 29 last year and was nearly unhittable for the remainder of the season.

He began his Miners career with an 18 inning scoreless streak and finished the season allowing just one earned run in 22.2 innings. The St. Louis native held opponents to a .165 batting average. He also nailed down the save in the Miners Game 3 victory against Windy City in the first round of the playoffs.

"Mike did an unbelievable job for us when he joined us down the stretch last season," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "It is a shame that he is not going to spring with an MLB organization, but I hope that he will get that opportunity soon. In the meantime he will be our go-to guy to wrap up games. I am thrilled to have Mike back with us."

The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For the latest news and updates, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
