Former Winterhawk Rodrigo Abols Signs NHL Deal

Winterhawks alumnus Rodrigo Abols signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, May 28.

The 23-year-old center recently completed his second professional season overseas with Orebro Hockey Club in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), leading the team with 18 goals in 45 games.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound native of Riga, Latvia, has represented Latvia at the IIHF World Championship four times, including the 2019 World Championships. Abols is a two-time gold medalist at the WJC Division 1-A level with the Latvian junior team.

After being selected 50th overall in the first round of the CHL Import Draft, Abols played for the Portland Winterhawks during the 2015-16 season. He had an impressive rookie campaign as a 19-year-old prospect scoring 20 goals and dishing out 30 assists for 50 points in 64 games.

Thanks to his strong season in Portland, Abols was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round (184th overall pick) of the 2016 NHL Draft. Abols finished his junior hockey career in the QMJHL with Acadie-Bathurst before turning pro. He scored 23 goals and 38 assists for 61 points in 63 games with the Titan.
