Former Stampede All-Star Joins Coaching Staff

October 2, 2008 - NBA G League (G League)
Idaho Stampede News Release

BOISE, Idaho, October 2, 2008 - Your Idaho Stampede announce the hiring of Randy Livingston as Associate Head Coach for the Stampede's 2008-09 season.

A native of Louisiana, Livingston attended Louisiana State University for two years. Despite a college career plagued by various injuries, Livingston made it to the NBA as a second-round draft pick of the Houston Rockets in 1996 and appeared in 64 games as a rookie.

Over the next 11 seasons, Livingston played with the Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Seattle SuperSonics, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, and the Utah Jazz. Livingston also spent some time in the Turkish basketball league playing for Galatasaray.

In between his NBA contracts and overseas travel, he had several stints in the CBA playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce and the Idaho Stampede. Most recently, Livingston was named the 2007 NBA Development League's MVP.

Livingston announced his retirement from playing basketball at the end of the 2007-08 D-League season. This announcement came after he helped lead the Idaho Stampede to the 2008 NBA Development League Championship where they clinched the series 2-1 over the Austin Toros. Livingston ended his playing career as the Stampede's leader in points scored (2,224) and games played (163).

"Randy Livingston symbolizes what the Idaho Stampede is all about," said Stampede Head coach, Bryan Gates. "I'm excited to hire him because we have gone through so much together. Anytime you can hire one of your good friends, it's a big positive. Once Ray Lopes left, the job was Randy's if he wanted it. I am thrilled he wants to continue his career with the Stampede."

Joel Abelson will also be joining the Stampede as an assistant coach for the 2008-09 season. Abelson spent last season with the Tulsa 66ers as an assistant coach.

"Joel's hard work and dedication to the 66ers least season with coach Meyer made it a very easy decision to bring him on board," said Stampede Head Coach Bryan Gates. "We're excited to add a smart, up-and-coming coach like Joel to the Stampede family."

The Michigan graduate spent this past summer working at Abunassar Impact Basketball in Las Vegas, training NBA stars such as Baron Davis, Jermaine O'Neal, Chauncey Billups, and Paul Pierce. He has also worked in basketball operations for the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007.
