Erie SeaWolves News Release
(Erie, PA) - Former Erie SeaWolves starting pitcher Justin Verlander was honored today by the Baseball Writer's Association of America as the American League Rookie of the Year.
Verlander is now one of four Detroit Tigers to win the prestigious honor since the inception of the award in 1949. Other Tigers to win the award include Harvey Kuenn (1953), Mark "The Bird" Fidrych (1976) and Lou Whitaker (1978). It is also the first time in 25 years that a starting pitcher was honored with the AL honor, since the New York Yankees' Dave Righetti in 1981.
Verlander is also the second Rookie of the Year to play in Erie. Sam "The Jet" Jethroe, who played for the Erie Pontiacs, won the NL Rookie of the Year in 1950.
Verlander helped lead the Tigers to their first American League Championship since 1984 with his record of 17-9 and a 3.63 ERA. His 17 victories led all rookies and tied him for fourth in the majors. He also recorded the most strikeouts (124) of all rookie pitchers in the American League and posted the lowest ERA among Tigers starters.
