New Orleans VooDoo News Release
NEW ORLEANS (February 21, 2011) - The New Orleans VooDoo signed former University of Rhode Island quarterback Derek Cassidy, announced head football coach Derek Stingley on Monday afternoon.
Cassidy (QB, 6'2" 205 lbs.) will compete for a roster spot in training camp, and replaces quarterback D Bryant who was placed on the Refuse to Report List. Cassidy will dress in jersey number 12 during training camp.
"Derek is a young, coachable talent with some upside. We look for him to add competition to the quarterback position in camp," said Stingley. "D Bryant is finishing up his master's degree requirements, and will look to join us thereafter he graduates."
Cassidy, a Winter Haven, Fla. native, lettered four seasons at quarterback for the Rhode Island Rams. Of the 34 games he played in for the Rams, he started 29 from his sophomore to senior season. His best statistical season came as a senior in 2008 when he completed 261-of-440 passes for 2,759 yards, 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The VooDoo will be the first professional experience for Cassidy, and he will enter training camp as a rookie.
