Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Thursday, January 9, 2014) - Former Colorado Rapids Assistant Coach Wilmer Cabrera was named the new Head Coach of MLS side Chivas USA on Thursday. Cabrera had spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Rapids as an Assistant Coach under Oscar Pareja.
"We want to thank Wilmer for his service to the Rapids over the last two years," said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. "Our club is a place where coaches and players alike can develop, and we wish him luck in his new position."
The Rapids had granted Chivas USA permission to speak with Cabrera about the position in early December, following a season in which the Rapids had made the playoffs and the Rapids Reserves, under Cabrera's direction, finished with a 5-7-2 (W-L-T) record. Cabrera joined the Rapids at the start of 2012 after serving more than four years as the head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team. He had a 20-year professional playing career in Colombia, Argentina, Costa Rica and the United States, playing in the 1990 and 1998 World Cups for Colombia.
Colorado holds the 11th overall selection in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, to take place on January 16 in Philadelphia, and the Rapids will open preseason in late January. The Rapids season starts on March 15 at New York Red Bulls, with the Home Opener at Dick's Sporting Goods Park against the Portland Timbers on March 22.
