Former Pirates Player, Assistant Coach John Slaney Named Assistant Coach of Arizona Coyotes

Portland, ME - The Arizona Coyotes today announced the hiring of former Portland Pirates player and Assistant Coach John Slaney as an Assistant Coach on their staff, beginning in the 2015-16 season.

Slaney spent the past four seasons as an Assistant Coach with the Pirates, where he helped guide Portland to a 140-128-17-19 record and two playoff appearances. During all four years of his tenure, the Pirates served as the top affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes. Slaney aided in the development of current Coyotes defensemen Michael Stone, Connor Murphy, and Brandon Gormley.

Slaney began his coaching career in Portland after he retired as a player in 2011. He played a total of 1,124 professional games in the NHL, AHL, IHL, DEL (Germany), and in the Czech Republic. Slaney was named the winner of the AHL's Eddie Shore Award as the league's top defenseman in 2000-01 and 2001-02 as a member of the Philadelphia Phantoms. He won a Calder Cup with the Phantoms in 2005 and held the AHL record for points by a defenseman (519) when he left the league as a player after the 2006-07 season.

He skated in 37 games with the Portland Pirates between 1993 and 1995. Slaney scored 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points during that time.

The 43 year-old St. John's, Newfoundland native was inducted into the American Hockey League Hall of Fame in 2014.
