Former Missions Pitcher King Felix Wins Cy Young

SAN ANTONIO - The Baseball Writer's Association named former Missions Pitcher Felix Hernandez the 2010 American League Cy Young Award Winner. Felix becomes the 8th former San Antonio Missions player to be awarded the Cy Young and the first since Eric Gagne in 2003. Other former Missions players are: Pedro Martinez ('00, '99, '97), Dennis Eckersley ('92), Bob Welch ('90), Orel Hershiser ('88), Fernando Valenzuela ('81), Bob Turley ('58).

Felix was 13-12 for the Seattle Mariners this season with a league leading 2.27 ERA in 249 2/3 innings pitched. Felix finished with 232 strikeouts one behind league leading Jered Weaver. Felix became the first AL pitcher to win the award with only 13 wins. Fernando Valenzuela won the 1981 NL Cy Young with 13 wins as well, but the '81 season was cut short (110 games) because of the strike.

Hernandez was 5-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 57 innings of work as a member of the San Antonio Missions in 2004. The 18yr old struck out 58 batters in the Texas League in his 10 games for the Missions in 2010.
