Former Mechanics Named To U.S. Olympic Team

FRASER, MI- Former Motor City Mechanics, Chris Chelios and Derian Hatcher have achieved a lot of accolades and accomplishments during their careers, but none greater then being selected to represent their country in the 2006 Winter Olympics.

The Olympics are being held in Turin, Italy and began on February 11th and run to the 26th. The round robin hockey tournament starts on Feb 15th with the Gold Medal game being held on February 26th.

Chelios will be making his fourth Olympic appearance, playing in the 1984, 1998 and 2002 games. Hatcher will be making his second Olympic appearance, playing in the 1998 games.

Last season Chelios and Hatcher were among four NHL players to don the Mechanics sweater. In their brief but memorable time spent at the "Garage" both made an impact on and off the ice.

Chelios played in 23 games with the Mechanics netting 5 goals, 19 assists for 24 points and finished with a +13 rating making him the second leading scoring defenseman on the team. Hatcher played in 24 games netting 5 goals, 12 assists for 17 points and finished with a +9 rating.

"Its always nice to see some of your own players get the recognition they deserve," said Mechanics Team President, John Tull. "These two guys have proven themselves to be great competitors and will surely be a benefit to the US team and we wish them luck in the pursuit of the Gold."

The Mechanics take on the Kalamazoo Wings this Wednesday the 21st at 7:30 p.m. and the Quad City Mallards on Friday the 23rd.. Wednesday is ladies night presented by 94.7 WCSX and MB Jewelers and Friday is a Radio Disney Holiday with the Mechanics.
