Former Jet Dave Hanson To Appear At Chiefs' Home Opener

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that former Johnstown Jet Dave Hanson will be on hand at their home opener on Saturday, October 17 against Cincinnati.

Along with meeting Chiefs fans and dropping the ceremonial first puck, Hanson will be selling and signing copies of his autobiography, "Slap Shot Original: The Man, the Foil, and the Legend." Co-authored by Ross Bernstein, "Original" hit bookstore shelves in October 2008.

"I am really happy to be returning to the place where it all started and can't wait to see many old friends and fans. And, of course, I look forward to seeing the Chiefs beat Cincinnati and start the season off on the right foot," said Hanson.

Today Hanson manages the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, but in his playing days he gained popularity by racking up penalty minutes. His pension for playing a rough-and-tumble style landed Hanson the role of Jack Hanson in the classic movie "Slap Shot" that starred Paul Newman and was filmed in Johnstown. The former defenseman joined brothers Steve and Jeff Carlson as the famous Hanson Brothers, and their popularity helped propel the Charlestown Chiefs and "Slap Shot" to cult status among sports and movie fans.

Hanson's hockey skills weren't an act, though; he could really play. The defenseman's first season with the Jets in 1974-75 he helped produce a Lockhart Cup Championship, Johnstown's last pro hockey championship. Three seasons later Hanson made it to the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, and the season after that he notched two points (1G, 1A) in 22 games with the Minnesota North Stars.

"With all of its tradition and history, no one character is more synonymous with Johnstown hockey than Dave Hanson. We are honored to have Dave as part of our opening night ceremonies, which promise to be a treat for Chiefs fans of all ages. I couldn't think of a better way to kick off the 2009-10 season," said Chiefs vice president and general manager Bill Bredin.

Hanson will be available pregame from 6:00 until 6:45 and from the start of the first period until the start of the second period in the Slap Shot Lounge area of the Cambria County War Memorial.
