Former Iowa Lineman Re-assigned to Steamwheelers

DAVENPORT, Iowa — The Quad City Steamwheelers announced today that they have been re-assigned offensive/defensive lineman Pete Traynor along with new signee wide receiver / defensive back Billy Cook by the arenafootball2 (af2) league office.

Traynor, 6'5" 295 lbs., returns to the Steamwheelers for a second season. Assigned to the Steamwheelers on May 19, 2003, Traynor was quick to make an immediate impact, recording a tackle in his first appearance of the season against Louisville. He finished the season with two tackles and played throughout all regular season games upon being assigned to the Steamwheelers.

At the University of Iowa Traynor was listed as the second team center going into the 2002 football season seeing the field in wins over the University of Akron, Utah State University, Michigan State, and the Minnesota In the 2001 season he saw limited action in wins over Kent State University, University of Miami-Ohio, and Northwestern.

Cook helped lead Grand Valley State University to back-to-back Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference titles in 1997 and 1998. Cook, a defensive back / kick returner for Grand Valley State, was named to the MIFC first team in 1998 as a specialty player and led all of Division II in kick returns with 17 returns for 597 yards.

Cook is no stranger to the af2 having played for the Peoria Pirates in 2001 and the Charleston Swamp Foxes in 2002. He appeared in eight games in 2001 for the Pirates recording eight receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown. On the side of the ball he tallied 14 tackles and two pass deflections for the Pirate defense.

With the Swamp Foxes in 2002, Cook had an immediate impact on special teams. He ranked in the af2 top ten for kick returns having 58 returns for 1477 yards and five touchdowns. Cook contributed on the defensive side of the ball by recording 63 tackles, four interceptions, and 17 pass deflections for the Pirates.

This now brings the Steamwheelers training camp roster to 29 players with six spots remaining open for camp, which opens on March 18. Players report on March 17.
