Former Grizzly Earns Conn Smythe Trophy for NHL Champion Ducks

Anaheim, California - Former Utah Grizzlies defenseman Scott Niedermayer was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs, as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Ottawa Senators 6-2 Wednesday night to capture the Stanley Cup Championship.

Niedermayer had one assist in Wednesday's game five, setting up Travis Moen's tip in to give Anaheim a 5-2 third period lead. Overall, Niedermayer had three goals and eight assists in the 2006-2007 playoffs. Two of his goals were game-winners. He also tallied a game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation during this year's postseason.

The member of the 1998-1999 Utah Grizzlies earns his fourth Stanley Cup Championship, after previously winning three with the New Jersey Devils in 1995, 2000 and 2003. He played five games as a member of the Grizzlies.

Another former Grizzlies defenseman Ric Jackman was also part of the Ducks Championship run.

It marks the second straight season that at least one former Grizzlies player has won the Stanley Cup. Ray Whitney was a member of the 2006 Champion Carolina Hurricanes.

Former Salt Lake Golden Eagles Head Coach Dave Farrish completes his second season as an Anaheim Assistant Coach in championship fashion.

The Grizzlies open the 2007-2008 season on Friday, October 19 at US Airways Center in Downtown Phoenix visiting the RoadRunners. The home opener for the Grizzlies is Friday, October 26 versus Idaho.

The Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL, enter their third season in America's "Premier AA Hockey League." On May 22, 2007, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie announced an affiliation with the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. At the start of the 2006-2007 season, 23 former Grizzlies were on NHL rosters. 12 of those former players advanced to the playoffs.
