San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 17, 2006) - The two-time ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats added two more free agents to their off season roster by agreeing to contract terms with former Cal Bear BURL TOLER and CLEANNORD SAINTIL, the club announced today.
"You can never have enough athletes on your team and these are two very athletic football players," said SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet.
A product of the East Bay, Toler (6-2, 190) was born in El Sobrante and prepped at Bishop O'Dowd High School before moving on to a four-year career at Cal. In 41 games with the Bears he caught 69 passes for 873 yards and three touchdowns.
As a junior in 2003, Toler placed second on the team with 48 receptions, but saw limited action during his senior season due to injuries. Most recently, Toler signed with the Oakland Raiders and spent time on the NFL team's practice squad.
A former walk-on receiver with the Bears program, Toler's father was also a walk-on at Cal who became a starting linebacker in the mid-1970's. His grandfather, Burl Toler, Sr., was an All-America football player at USF in 1951 and later became the first African-American game official in NFL history.
Saintil (5-11, 195) played two seasons at Middle Tennessee State University posting the highest two-season reception total in school history with 106. As a senior in 2005 Saintil started all 11 games and was named first-team All-Sun Belt Conference after leading the league with 66 receptions, the fifth highest single-season total at MTSU.
After catching 38 passes in just six games and earning All-Jayhawk Conference honors at Highland (Kansas) Community College, Saintil joined the Blue Raiders squad and ranked third on the team with 40 receptions as a junior in 2004. A versatile athlete, Saintil also ran the ball twice scoring a touchdown and returned 11 kickoffs.
A premier franchise in the AFL, San Jose has captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade. Season tickets for the SaberCats 13th season in the AFL, which begins next February, are available now by calling (408) 573-5577.
