Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WUERFEL PARK - The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to report that former pitcher D.J. Johnson has been added to the Minnesota Twins' roster for their spring training game vs. Baltimore today.
Johnson spent parts of two seasons with the Beach Bums, most recently in 2014, appearing in 38 total games as a reliever. He started last season in Traverse City before signing with the Twins' organization in July. With the Beach Bums he made 24 appearances with 14 saves, 1.30 ERA, 35 strikeouts over 27.2 innings pitched. Johnson was selected for the Frontier League All-Star Game but signed with Minnesota before the game took place.
He finished the baseball season pitching for the Twins' Florida State League High-A affiliate in Fort Myers, FL going 2-0, 2.92 ERA in 12 relief outings. Fort Myers went on to win the Florida State League championship.
The Beaverton, OR native made his professional debut with the Tampa Bay organization in 2010 at the rookie-level. He eventually joined the Beach Bums for the 2011 season, appearing in 14 games in relief going 1-0, 1.54 ERA. Following that season, he rejoined affiliated baseball by signing a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks and pitched in their organization in 2012.
The 10th season of Beach Bums baseball begins Friday May 15 at Evansville at 6:35pm with the home opener scheduled for Friday May 22nd vs. Windy City at 7:05pm.
All games will be broadcast live on 98.1 The Bear.
The Wuerfel Park offices are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The Beach Bums will play 51 games at Wuerfel Park in 2015 starting with the home opener and a FANtastic Fireworks Friday on May 22 at 7:05 pm. Season ticket packages are now available!
