Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers ace from the 2004 season Felix Hernandez threw a perfect game Wednesday for the Seattle Mariners, the first in Mariners' franchise history. The 26 year-old continues to make baseball history, having won the American League Cy Young Award in 2010, and now throwing the 23rd perfect game in major league history.
"We could not be more proud of Felix for what he has accomplished as a major leaguer and what he did while with the Inland Empire 66ers," said 66ers Assistant General Manager Ryan English. "It's just another example of why being a fan of the Inland Empire 66ers is so special. We get to watch the future super stars of the game in an atmosphere that allows access unobtainable now."
Hernandez is considered the greatest active former Inland Empire player and is one of the best all time along with Ken Griffey Jr. In 2004 as an 18-year-old Hernandez arrived in the Inland Empire and proceeded to dominate the California League. Hernandez was 9-3 with a 2.74 ERA with 114 strikeouts in 92 innings over 15 starts. If he maintained that pace over another 10 starts he would have achieved a 15 win, 200 strikeout season but Hernandez was promoted to AA instead where he continued to dominate all the way to the majors. Despite his abbreviated stint in the California League he still won the League's Pitcher of the Year Award, and remains the most recent winner of that award for the 66ers.
The current crop of Inland Empire 66ers continues its playoff push against the Lake Elsinore Storm before returning to San Manuel Stadium on Friday, August 17th. It will be a 50 cent Friday presented by Toyota and Scion of Redlands including a 66ers cap giveaway as the 66ers take on the Lancaster JetHawks. First pitch time is at 7:05, and fans can tune in for the broadcast on AM 1050 KCAA beginning at 6:55 for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Pre Game Show. The game can also be heard on www.66ers.com or through the 66ers new I-Phone App.
