Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa — When an opposing team comes to town averaging 53 points a game, the home team’s defense has one thing in mind — shutting down the offense. That is exactly what Quad City Steamwheelers defensive specialist Matt Forbes and the rest of the Steamwheelers defense did Saturday night to the Green Bay Blizzard.

The arenafootball2 league office announced Tuesday that ForbesÂ’ stellar performance against the Blizzard earned him ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The Steamwheelers shut down the then seventh best scoring offense in the league, limiting the Blizzard to half of their season total in a 47-26 Steamwheelers victory. The win improved the ‘Wheelers to 4-1 on the season and back into first place tie in the National Conference Midwest Division with the Louisville Fire.

Forbes was a major force in shutting down former Steamwheelers offensive specialist and current Blizzard offensive specialist Randall Lane. Although Lane, Forbes’ roommate while with the ‘Wheelers, had a game-high nine catches for 144 yards and three scores, Forbes broke up five passes and had two interceptions to go along with his game-high eight tackles and forced a key fumble. Forbes stopped five of Green Bay’s possessions with either an interception, forced fumble or pass deflection on fourth down.

On the season, Forbes has 24.5 tackles (third in the af2), a tackle for loss, four interceptions (first), 11 pass deflections (third), and three forced fumbles (first).

This is the first time that Forbes has earned the honor and second time this season that a Steamwheelers player has won a weekly af2 award. Steamwheelers offensive specialist Jeff Hewitt was named Baby Ruth Real Deal Player of the Week after his Week 1 performance against the Manchester Wolves.

The Steamwheelers are preparing to add another chapter in the “War on I-74” this Friday night against the Peoria Pirates. The battle for the “Ruler of the River” trophy will kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Peoria Civic Center and will also be aired on Mediacom throughout most of Iowa and western Illinois. Check your local listings for the Mediacom channel in your area.
