Moncton-NB - Danny Flynn, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Moncton Wildcats, has been awarded the Ron Lapointe Trophy as Coach of the Year in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
With a distinguished career in coaching, Danny Flynn had his name engraved on the Memorial Cup as member of the coaching staff of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 1990's. He coached the St. Francis Xavier X-Men to a national university championship in 2003-2004. In 2005-2006, he was the associate coach of the Wildcats when they captured their first league championship. He spent the 2006-2007 season as an assistant coach with the New York Islanders of the NHL before returning to the Wildcats as Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations in 2007-2008.
In his second season behind the bench, Flynn guided the Wildcats to a first place finish in the Atlantic Division and a 45-point improvement over the previous season. He was given the honour on Wednesday night at the League's Golden Puck Awards held at Montreal's Hyatt-Regency Hotel. The two other nominees for the award were Guy Boucher of the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Eric Veilleux of the Shawinigan Cataractes.
Over the 68-game regular season, the Wildcats set new franchise and league records having only been scored on 149 times and were awarded the Robert LeBel Trophy for the team with goals against average of 2.16. The previous Wildcats record was 2.47 set in 2004-2005 while the best league record was 2.33 set by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in 2003-2004. Flynn's team set a new league record for most consecutive road wins of 10 at the beginning of the year and for gaining points in the first 20 games played at the season's start.
The Wildcats will begin their quarter final playoff series with the Rimouski Oceanic in front of a sold out crowd, on Friday night at the J. Louis Levesque Arena at 7 p.m. Game two will be played on Saturday night. Fans are asked to wear white to show their support of the home team.
Due to the sell out Wildcats fans will be able to see the games via the internet on the Telus webcast at www.moncton-wildcats.com with Les Stoodley calling the action. The games will also be carried live on Rogers Radio, News 91.9 with Gerry Green providing the play-by-play.
