St. Lucie Mets News Release

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Lakeland Flying Tigers launched four home runs in a 9-5 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday at Henley Field.

Two of the bombs came in a seven-run fifth inning that ultimately decided the game. The teams entered the bottom of the fifth tied 1-1, but the contest unraveled for Mets starter Scarlyn Reyes. He made a throwing error and threw two wild pitches that let runs score. Finally, Joey Pankake crushed a three run homer to put the Flying Tigers up 7-1.

Wade Hinkle greeted reliever Domingo Tapia with a solo home run on Tapia's first pitch.

The Mets drew 10 walks but only one of those runners came around to score. Jonathan Johnson opened the game with a free pass and touched home on David Thompson's RBI ground out.

The Mets went 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position and they stranded a season-high 15 base runners.

The Mets tried to mount a comeback in the eighth. Pinch hitter Jhoan Urena ripped a two-run double. David Thompson followed with a two-run homer, his first for St. Lucie, to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Ben Verlander got one of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth with solo homer.

Reyes struck out eight in 4.1 innings but he was tagged for nine hits and seven runs.

Thompson went 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Johnson walked three times and he was also hit by a pitch.

Kevin Taylor, Patrick Biondi and John Mora each walked twice.

The three Mets pitchers - Reyes, Tapia and Mike Hepple - combined to strike out 12 hitters.

Next Up: The Mets (52-44, 17-12) and Flying Tigers (43-52, 9-18) conclude their four-game series at Henley Field on Sunday. The Mets are aiming for the series victory while the Flying Tigers hope for a split. First pitch is 1 p.m.
