Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Derek Campbell went yard and Mitch Walding cracked three hits on Saturday night to power the offense, but the Clearwater Threshers suffered a 9-4 loss to the Fort Myers Miracle at Bright Hosue Field.
Despite the loss, Clearwater (19-11) remains one game up on the Dunedin Blue Jays and 2.5 ahead of the Daytona Tortugas in the Florida State League North second-half standings.
Fort Myers (16-14) pushed home the game's first run in the third inning on Nick Gordon's RBI groundout, before the Threshers bounced back in the home half.
Jiandido Tromp was hit by a pitch, and Cord Sandberg sacrificed him down to second. Carlos Tocci chopped an infield hit to shortstop to put runners at the corners with one out, and Malquin Canelo's fielder's choice grounder pushed home Tromp to tie the ballgame.
The Miracle opened up the game in the fourth.
Fort Myers loaded the bases against Ranfi Casimiro (7-7) with one down, and Casimiro induced a popout from AJ Murray to secure the second out. Casimiro had TJ White at a 1-2 count, but White pushed a single to right to plate a pair and put the Miracle back in front. Gordon followed with a three-run homer to right to make it a 6-1 game.
Campbell cut into that deficit in the bottom half, launching an offspeed offering from Fernando Romero out to left for his ninth home run of the season. The two-run shot sliced the Miracle lead in half, pulling Clearwater to within three.
Fort Myers managed to tack on facing reliever Joe DeNato, plating a pair in the fifth to go up 8-3.
Down 9-3 in the ninth, the Threshers brought a run across against reliever Luke Bard. Kyle Martin singled through the right side, and Walding drove a double to the track in left to put two men in scoring position. Chace Numata's grounder to short scored Martin with the final tally.
Clearwater will have a chance to take the series on Sunday, as John Richy (2-4) toes the rubber against Miles Norgren (0-2) at 1 p.m. All the action will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com and the TuneIn app starting at 12:45 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
