BRISTOL - Ryan Day tossed five scoreless innings and Greeneville scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning as the Flyboys handed the Bristol State Liners a 6-1 loss on Saturday night at Boyce Cox Field.

Greeneville (26-13-1) secured its fifth consecutive victory and improved to 6-1 against Bristol this season. The Flyboys remain 4.5 games ahead of second-place Elizabethton after the River Riders defeated Pulaski 8-5 on Saturday.

Homer Bush, Jr. returned to the Greeneville lineup and would work a 12-pitch at-bat to open the contest as he reached base following a dropped third strike by Bristol. Kyle Karros would give the Flyboys a 1-0 lead in the frame with a double that allowed Bush, Jr. to score easily from second.

Bristol starter Matthew Buchanan would match the start by Day as both kept the opposition off-guard through the first five innings of action. Day would allow just three hits through five innings of work and notched eight strikeouts on the mound for Greeneville. Buchanan scattered four hits through his five innings of work and fanned four Greeneville hitters while allowing one unearned run.

Greeneville rallied against the Bristol bullpen as Jared Parenti would only record one out in the top of the sixth inning. Tayler Aguilar increased the Flyboys' lead to 3-0 by delivering his second home run of the season. His two-run home run scored Karros, who opened the inning with an infield single to third base. A bases-loaded walk to Darius Perry later in the inning would extend the lead to 4-0. Two more runs would score as Bush, Jr. reached on a fielder's choice followed by a throwing error from the State Liners to make it 6-0.

The 6-0 score would be held by the Greeneville bullpen as Sam Peddycord worked three scoreless innings of relief. Peddycord worked around a pair of doubles by the State Liners while adding a strikeout on the night. Bristol rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth as Mykanthony Valdez delivered a two-out solo home run against John Day to make it 6-1. Day would get the final out of the night thanks to a groundball to third that would be fielded by Karros to secure the victory.

Day improved to 1-1 on the season as Greeneville registered back-to-back victories from its starting pitchers for the first time during the 2021 season. Karros finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate, while Emanuel Dean went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Greeneville hitters worked nine walks against Bristol pitching through the final four innings of play, including four against Bristol reliever Griffin Bruder.

Greeneville returns to Boyce Cox Field for the final time this season with a seven-inning contest scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday. The inaugural Appalachian League All-Star Game will be held on July 27th at 7 p.m. Greeneville will send seven players to the all-star outing in Pulaski, Va., the home of the Pulaski River Turtles.
