Birmingham Barons News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - Bernardo Flores was dominant for the Birmingham Barons (13-21) in their 5-2 victory Thursday night over the Jackson Generals (17-16) at The Ballpark at Jackson.
It was a solid outing for Barons left-handed starter Flores, who notched his third quality start of the season. He went six full innings and didn't allow any runs on just five hits. Flores lowered his ERA down to 2.84.
Nate Nolan, in his fourth game as a Baron, smacked an opposite field home run to right field in the second to open the scoring at 2-0. It was his second hit and first homer as a Baron. It was also the third time in the first four games this series the Birmingham has scored first.
With the Barons leading 4-0 in the fifth, Luis Robert put his dangerous athleticism on display. La Pantera led off with a walk and would go on to steal second moments later. The very next pitch while on second, he swiped third easily and the throw from Generals catcher Daulton Varsho was wide of third. It allowed Robert to come home and make it an early 5-0 Barons lead.
Jackson made it closer for comfort in the bottom of the ninth. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Jeffery Baez and Pavin Smith made it a three-run game.
After Flores' departure, Zach Burdi pitched one scoreless inning. Connor Walsh went a scoreless eighth and got two outs in the ninth. After giving up a couple runs, left-hander Hunter Schryver came on and registered the final out and earned his second save of the season.
Gavin Sheets knocked in RBI No. 13 and 14 in the third inning a two-out, two-run single that scored Luis Basabe and Luis Gonzalez to make it 4-0.
For Sheets, the single gave him a hit in 13 of his last 19 games as well as reaching base safely in 15 of them. Trey Michalczewski also extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games.
Barons are now 4-0 this season when playing on Thursday. It's the only day of the week the Barons have a winning record.
The rubber match of this five-game series with Jackson will begin at 6:05 p.m. Friday. Right-hander Jimmy Lambert (3-1, 2.94 ERA) will get the start for the Barons and make his seventh start of the season.
WJOX-AM 690 will be the home of the Barons on Sunday. Fans can tune into the Coca-Cola Pregame Show starting at 5:50 p.m.
The Birmingham Barons are the proud Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Barons will open the home portion of their 2019 season, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of Michael Jordan's lone year in baseball, against the Tennessee Smokies at 7:05 p.m. April 10 at Regions Field.
