Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Brockton 2B Scott Wearne upped his season average to .349 with a 3-for-4 evening as the Rox defeated the Pittsfield Colonials, 5-3, in a Can-Am League contest at Campanelli Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Rox (9-9) jumped on the board early with three in the first, courtesy of a two-out, two-run single by Wearne, followed by another RBI single by LF Mike Conroy. The scored stayed that way until the fifth, when 1B Melvin Falu blasted a two-run shot, his second of the season, to make it a 5-0 Brockton lead.
Brockton starter Freddy Flores cruised through the early part of the game, retiring the first 11 Pittsfield batters he faced. The Colonials (5-13) wouldn't score until the seventh, when RF Angel Molina hit a solo home run, his second of the season.
Pittsfield made things interesting late, plating two more runs in the eighth. 3B Anthony Manuel and DH Matt Nandin started the inning with back-to-back singles off of Flores. Colin Lynch then came in to relieve, and gave up a single to SS Danny Bomback, plating Manuel. Two batters later, CF Daniel Carte singled home Nandin, making the score 5-3, Rox.
It was as close as the score would get, however; after Pittsfield threatened runners on second and third in the ninth, Brockton closer Josh Papelbon shut the door for his fifth save of the season.
On the evening, Freddy Flores (2-0) gave up three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work, fanning four for the win. Miguel Flores (1-2) took the loss for the Colonials, allowing five runs (two earned) in five innings pitched.
Wearne was the only Rox hitter with more than one hit on the evening; his .349 average is currently seventh-best in the league. Bomback, Carte and 2B Chris Torres each had two-hit nights for Pittsfield.
The Rox look for the series sweep on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium at 7:05 p.m. as Brockton's Wayne Lundgren (1-1) faces Matt White (1-2). It's Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark, with $2 drink specials at the park.
