Brockton Rox News Release
Pittsfield, Mass. - Rox starting RHP Freddy Flores pitched six shutout innings with a season-high eight strikeouts as Brockton won its eight consecutive contest, 7-1, on Friday night at Wahconah Park. The Rox finished with double-digit hits for the sixth straight game.
Brockton opened the game with three runs on three hits in the first inning. It was the fifth time in six games that the Rox (15-9 second half, 42-29 overall) plated first-inning runs. DH John Parke walked with out one out and then scored all the way from first on 2B Shawn Williams' double.
Two batters later, RF Keith Brachold drove Williams home with a single. Brachold would later get credit for a steal of home in a double-steal attempt as C Chris Grossman was caught in a rundown between first and second base.
Flores then proceeded to shutdown the Colonials (14-11, 34-38), giving up eight hits over his six innings with no walks. Flores left the game after six with a pitch count of 71 and the Rox leading, 6-0.
Brockton made it 6-0 in the sixth with two home runs. Williams led off with a solo shot, his fourth of the season, and then Grossman launched a two-run dinger to straightaway center for his seventh of the year.
Pittsfield scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning when 1B Jerod Edmondson scored from third on a wild pitch. He had reached on a single, moved to second on a balk and then to third base on a ground ball against LHP Brad Hertzler. SS Dominic Ramos gave the Rox their six-run advantage back with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Flores (7-2) has won two consecutive starts after not having a win in five previous outings. Hertzler pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit with no walks and one strikeouts. RHP Colin Lynch threw a perfect ninth with one strikeout.
Pittsfield starting LHP Jon Venters (1-3) took the loss, surrendering six runs on ten hits in six innings with two walks and four punchouts.
Williams finished with his second four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with the homer, a double and two RBI. Brachold, Grossman and Conroy all were 3-for-4.
SS Matt Nandin (2-for-4) and DH Donny Leon (2-for-4) had multi-hit affairs for the Colonials.
RHP Jose Aquino (1-2) takes the hill in game three of the series on Saturday night against Pittsfield RHP Patrick Moran (4-1). First pitch at Wahconah Park is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
