Florence Comeback Runs out of Steam in Loss to Washington

WASINGTON, PA - Facing an early 7-0 deficit Wednesday night, Florence's offense scored six unanswered runs. But then the Y'alls left the tying and the go-ahead runners on base to end the eighth inning and allowed five runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Washington held on and pulled away for a 12-6 win at Wild Things Park.
With the win, the Wild Things (27-14) have secured a series victory, their eleventh series win over the past twelve series. The series loss snaps a streak of five consecutive series wins for the Y'alls (17-22). Washington has won four of the first five games of the season series.
Down 7-0 after four frames, Florence scored three runs in two different innings to make things interesting. Three consecutive hits started the fifth inning, including an Axel Johnson RBI single to get the Y'alls on the board. Two more runs came home on fielder's choice.
Now a 7-3 score in the eighth and facing the bullpen for the first time, Florence cracked three doubles off of Dan Kubiak with runs batted in going to Bryant Flete, Harrison DiNicola, and Brennan Price. The double for DiNicola is his seventeenth of the year to lead the Frontier League. Lukas Young, the closer for Washington, came in to relieve Kubiak and recorded the final two outs to strand the two important runners on base.
It turned out not to be a five-out save for Young. Washington scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a two-run double for Andrew Czech, a RBI single for Wagner Lagrange, two balls behind the catcher, and an error to take the wind out of Florence's sails. The Y'alls would go down in order in the ninth.
Washington scored three runs in the first inning, two more in the second, and two in the fourth for the big lead right out of the starting blocks. Andrew Czech hit a two-run home run and Alex Alvarez blasted two home runs to highlight the early scoring in support of starter Rob Whalen, who went seven innings to earn his league-best eighth save of the year. All seven runs were charged to Jonaiker Villalobos across five innings of work.
Five Wild Things had a multi-hit game, led by three knocks for Cole Brannen. Washington looks to carry the momentum into tomorrow to finish off the series sweep against the Y'alls. Jake McMahill takes on Sandro Cabrera for a 7:05 PM first pitch before Florence stays on the road for four games out in Schaumburg over the long weekend.
