Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Barrie, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors emerged victorious, 5-4 after a seesaw battle with the Barrie Colts tonight at the Barrie Molson Centre. The Majors record now sits at 17-2-0-1 which puts them seven points ahead of the Niagara IceDogs in the Central Division and Eastern Conference.
Rob Flick scored a goal in each period to record his first career OHL hat-trick. Taylor Carnevale also supplied the Colts with a hat-trick but Barrie could not match the fire power of Mississauga on the night. The Majors got on the board just over six minutes into the first period after the power play took advantage of the Colts 20th ranked penalty kill unit. After a fake shot from the point, Flemming passed to Jordan Mayer in the slot and Mayer fired on goal and Casey Cizikas tipped it in to make it 1-0 for the Majors. Taylor Carnevale scored his first goal of game off a deflection just over four minutes later on the man advantage to tie the game at 1-1. Steven Beyers then beat Dylan DeMelo on a one-on-one and beat Anthony Peters up high to give the Colts a 2-1 lead at 16:50 of the first. Flick responded for Mississauga just seconds later with his first goal of the game after Peter Di Salvo made a series of saves for Barrie but Flick was there to bang in the rebound to tie the game at 2-2. Mississauga outshot the Colts 18-5 in the first.
Flick put the Majors ahead just over seven minutes into the second period after getting a generous rebound off Gregg Sutch's shot. Di Salvo made the first save but the puck deflected into the air and onto the stick of Flick who put it away to make it 3-2. Taylor Carnevale tied things up for Barrie seconds later on the power play after he jumped on the loose puck and beat Peters to make it 3-3. In the final five minutes the Majors restored the lead and this time it would be for good as Kerby Rychel set up Corey Bureau with a crisp pass that got through three Barrie skaters and onto the stick of Bureau. Bureau beat Di Salvo to put Mississauga ahead 4-3 heading into the intermission.
At the 6:21 mark of the third period Chris Doyle gave the Majors a two goal cushion after tapping in the loose puck that trickled across the Colts crease. David Corrente's shot on goal was stopped by Di Salvo but Doyle was there to ensure the lead would be increased. Taylor Carnevale pulled the Colts to within one at 11:26 after getting past the Majors defence and beating Peters to cut the lead to 5-4. Rob Flick scored his third of the game into an empty net with 19 seconds remaining to make it 6-4 Mississauga and bring this one to a close. Anthony Peters stopped 16 shots to record his fifth win of the year. Peter Di Salvo takes the loss after stopping 35 shots for Barrie. Gregg Sutch recorded his second straight multi-point game with three assists, all of which came on Rob Flick's goals.
