Plymouth Whalers News Release
PLYMOUTH - Rookie defenseman Jesse Young (Walled Lake) scored his first Ontario Hockey League goal at 3:08 of the third period as the Kitchener Rangers built a 3-1 lead and then withstood a late Plymouth rally to defeat the Whalers, 3-2, before a sellout crowd of 3,969 Saturday night at Compuware Arena.
The sellout was the second straight for the Whalers (now 9-9-1-1), who drew 4,029 Friday night at Compuware Arena in a 2-1 victory over Windsor. Kitchener is now 14-5-0-0.
Young's goal came as a result of a fortunate bounce. His shot from the right point was going nowhere near the Plymouth net, but the puck hit a Whalers defender wide of the goal and caromed over the shoulder of Plymouth goaltender Scott Wedgewood.
Earlier, Gabriel Landeskog (16th) and Zach Lorentz (second) scored in the first period for the Rangers, who overcame an early Plymouth lead after Robbie Czarnik scored his ninth goal of the season at 4:59.
Czarnik's goal was the result of his speed and perseverance. He picked up the puck in neutral territory, skated into the Kitchener zone on the right wing and cut hard to the goal, following up his own shot and stuffing the puck past Kitchener goaltender Brandon Maxwell.
Landeskog tied the game 0:24 later and then Lorentz gave Kitchener a 2-1 lead at 15:50, batting the puck waist-high from the hashmarks over Wedgewood's shoulder. Kitchener led, 2-1, after one period.
The second period was scoreless, but the flow was among the best seen all season as Plymouth outshot Kitchener, 14-5.
Plymouth continued to pressure, but Young's carom shot gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead. Tyler Brown cut the Kitchener to lead at 3-2 at 14:38 as the result of hard work by Brown and his linemates Mitchell Heard and James Livingston deep in the Rangers zone. Brown scored on a quick backhand shot just outside the blue ice to cap a scramble in front of the Kitchener goal.
Trailing by a goal with 1:24 remaining, Plymouth head coach Mike Vellucci called a timeout and pulled Wedgewood for the extra attacker. The Whalers continued to pressure, but could not find the equalizer.
Plymouth outshot Kitchener, 31-19 and 24-10 over the final two periods.
The Whalers are off until next Friday when the play in Guelph at the Sleeman Centre against the Storm. Plymouth hosts Guelph next Saturday at 7:05pm at Compuware Arena in the Whalers annual Salute to Heroes night.
