Flames Sign Five More Junior Prospects

The Calgary Flames, the NHL affiliate of the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, announced today the signings of five junior prospects. The announcement was made by Flames' General Manager Darryl Sutter. Draft picks Matt Pelech (D), Gord Baldwin (D), Matt Keetley (G) and Brett Sutter (F) and free agent Brad Cole (D) have all signed entry level contracts with Calgary.

Pelech is a native of Toronto, Ontario. He was Calgary's first round pick, 26th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He had five goals and 30 assists for 35 points along with 171 penalty minutes for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League. He had three assists and 22 penalty minutes in 12 playoff games.

Baldwinwas chosen by the Flames in the third round, 69th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft. The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba had seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points along with 70 penalty minutes in 53 games for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League. He and his Tigers' teammates are currently competing in the 2007 Memorial Cup. In 23 playoff games so far, he has two goals and six assists along with 32 penalty minutes.

Keetley plays alongside Baldwin in Medicine Hat. The native of that Alberta town finished his third full season with a record of 42-11-1 and a 2.19 goals-against average in 55 games for the Tigers. He was named the WHL Playoff MVP in leading Medicine Hat to the Memorial Cup. So far, he as a record of 16-7 and a 2.18 GAA while playing in all 23 playoff games. Keetley was Calgary's fifth round pick, 158th overall, in 2005.

Sutter captained the Red Deer Rebels of the WHL in 2006-07 and finished as the team's third leading scorer. In 67 games, he had 28 goals and 29 assists for 57 points and 77 penalty minutes. The native of Viking, Alberta had three goals and four assists along with eleven penalty minutes in seven playoff games. He was Calgary's sixth round pick, 179th overall, in 2005.

Cole completed his junior career as the leading scorer among defensemen for the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL. In 63 games, he had 16 goals and 25 assists for 41 points and 64 penalty minutes. The native of Miniota, Manitoba also played for Seattle and Kootenay during his junior career.

With today's announcement, the Flames have signed seven players drafted in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Forward Daniel Ryder (Plymouth - OHL, 3rd round), forward J.D. Watt (Vancouver - WHL, 4th round), goaltender Kevin Lalande (Belleville - OHL, 5th round) and goaltender Leland Irving (Everett - WHL, 1st round 2006) signed earlier this season.

In addition to Baldwin and Keetley, Ryder and Watt are currently competing in the Memorial Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia.
