Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Jonathon Fixler drove in two runs and Jeremy Johnson tossed five innings of no-hit ball as Corpus Christi beat Midland 4-3 Friday night at Whataburger Field before 7,638.

The Hooks are 11-23 in the second half of Texas League play, 47-57 overall. Midland stands 20-14, 55-49.

Johnson, who carried a no-hitter into the sixth, improved to 4-9 while winning for the first time since June 21, a span of six starts. He turned the ball over to Jared Wells for the seventh after three hits, a run, four walks and four strikeouts. Johnson threw 90 pitches (56 strikes).

Michael Affronti's one-out triple and a sacrifice fly by David Cook staked the Hooks to a 1-0 first-inning lead.

Fixler doubled the margin off RockHounds starter Anthony Capra (5-9) with his fifth home run of 2010, a third-frame lead-off shot to the left-field berm.

The Hooks continued their odd-numbered inning pattern in the fifth. Jhon Florentino's perfectly-placed one-out double into the right-field corner set the stage for an RBI single from Fixler as Corpus Christi moved up 3-0.

Josh Horton broke up Johnson's no-no and scored the first Midland run. Horton moved into scoring position when Adrian Cardenas singled to right and home on Alex Valdez' hit the same direction.

The RockHounds pulled within a run in the seventh off Wells. Matt Sulentic opened with a double to center and achieved third via a passed ball. Jemile Weeks' sacrifice liner to right plated him.

The Hooks added an unearned run in the eighth. Derrick Gordon retired the first two hitters, but walked Kody Kirkland, who ultimately circled the bases on two errors by Cardenas at third base.

Midland made things interesting in the ninth against Evan Englebrook. Archie Gilbert and Sulentic singled and Gabriel Ortiz walked, loading the bases with none away. Weeks' single scored Gilbert to make it 4-3. Englebrook fanned Horton for the first out. Cardenas bounced into a fielder's choice as first baseman Jimmy VanOstrand fired home to get Sulentic. Val Majewski's fly to Cook in left ended the contest.

Capra's line: six innings, seven hits, three runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Jordan Lyles (7-8) takes the mound Saturday at 7:05 against Jeff Lyman (0-2). The first 2,000 fans receive a Hooks retro jersey, compliments of CITGO.
