Five Spits Prospects Headed to OHL Gold Cup

(Windsor, ON) - Five recent Spitfire draftees have been selected to take part in the upcoming OHL Gold Cup tournament, May 7-10 in Kitchener.

Gabriel Vilardi, Mike DiPietro, Kyle Auger, Thomas Stevenson and Devlin Shanahan will be among 160 1999-born players who will compete in a 20-game tournament, where they will be evaluated by Hockey Canada scouts.

The players were selected by the teams (member partners and Hockey Canada branches) appointed Director of Operations, with support from Darrell Woodley, Director of OHL Central Scouting.

Ryan Jankowski, Hockey Canada's head scout for the Men's Program of Excellence, will lead player selection for both the summer camp and three national teams, with assistance from regional scouts - Carl Bouchard (Quebec, Atlantic Canada), Wade Klippenstein (Western Canada), Darrell Woodley and Barclay Branch (Ontario).

125 of the players selected were chosen in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection back on April 11th, including 18 first-round picks - our own Gabe Vilardi (1st Round, #2 overall) among them.

SPITFIRE PROSPECTS CHOSEN

1. Gabe Vilardi, C, 6'2 185: Our first-round pick (#2 overall) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection, Vilardi was named the Ontario East Minor Hockey League's Player of the Year in 2014-15, after an outstanding season with the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA) in Rockland, Ontario.

2. Mike DiPietro, G, 5'11 190: After a great year with the Sun County Panthers Minor Midgets, the Spitfires made DiPietro their second-round pick (#23) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. The native of Amherstburg called being drafted by the Spitfires 'a dream come true'.

3. Kyle Auger, D, 5'9 169: The Spitfires headed north with their final second-round pick (#39) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection, grabbing offensively gifted defenceman Kyle Auger from the Thunder Bay Kings Minor Midget AAAs. Auger posted 15 goals and averaged a point-per game in 2014-15.

4. Thomas Stevenson, D, 6'1 168: Stevenson was Windsor's 10th Round pick (#168) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. In 30 games played with the Ottawa Jr 67s Minor Midget AAAs in 2014-15, the rangy defenceman posted four goals and 13 assists.

5. Devlin Shanahan, LW, 5'11 169: Shanahan was chosen in the 13th Round (#243) in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. In 33 games with the Mississauga Reps Minor Midget AAAs in 2014-15, he scored 17 times and added 15 assists.

ABOUT THE OHL GOLD CUP

The OHL Gold Cup is an annual event created to feature Ontario's top Under-16 talent.

As part of the revamped Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, the top players from the OHL Gold Cup will be invited to attend the Hockey Canada Under-17 National Camp where they will practice and compete against other players throughout Canada to earn a spot on Team Canada and compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
