
Five Run First Inning Too Much

The Calgary Vipers surrendered five runs in the first inning and could not come back losing 5-3 to the Long Beach Armada at Blair Field in Long Beach, California. The Vipers closed the gap to just two runs but in total could only manage six hits as Dustin Gober threw seven innings and gave up only four hits for the three runs. With the loss the Snakes are now 8-4 in the second half of the season and a half game back of the Edmonton Cracker-Cats for first place in the North Division.
Long Beach jumped all over the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with five runs and a 5-0 lead. Cleatus Davidson led off with a solo homerun and was followed by back-to-back doubles by Steve Moss and Chris Klemm for a second run. Norm Hutchins followed with a single and Brett Flowers knocked in a run with a base hit. After Dan Trumble reached on a fielder's choice and Hutchins on third base the two Armada executed a double steal for a fourth tally. Finally Julian Williams picked up a run batted in base knock to cap the frame.
Jorge Tang led off the top of the third inning with a triple and came around to score on a Darryl Brinkley sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to 5-1.
Calgary cut into the lead further in the top of the fourth frame with back-to-back doubles from Drew Miller and Felix Jose for a run. Jose than came around to score when Nelson Castro laid down a sacrifice bunt and third baseman Flowers committed a throwing error to make the score 5-3.
Joe Sergent (2-1) picked up his first loss as a Viper in giving up five earned runs in the first inning. Reggie Rivard and P.J. Bevis both came out of the bullpen and threw scoreless innings for the Snakes.
Calgary will now play in a matchup of the two first half champions when they take on the Orange County Flyers Monday July 28th at 6:05 PM (MDT) for a double-header. Wednesday July 30th the two teams will play another double-header starting at 6:05 PM (MDT) to conclude the four game series.
The Vipers have a big weekend planned against their arch-rival Edmonton Cracker-Cats when they return to Foothills Stadium on August 1st at 7:05 PM (MDT). Friday night will be Vipers Key Chain Giveway Night with the first 1500 fans receiving that gift. Saturday the Vipers and Calgary Stampeders are teaming up for a baseball-football doubleheader. The baseball game begins at 2:30 PM (MDT) and starting at 4.00 PM (MDT) football fans will receive free admission by presenting their Stamps-Riders ticket. Vipers fans will be allowed to park free on Vipers property if they chose to move their vehicles from the McMahon Stadium lot starting at 4:00 PM (MDT).
