Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws let a pair of leads get away, but still found a way to get it done Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium - Matt Ceriani's bloop single down the right field line with two outs in the bottom of the 9th plated Julian Benavidez with the game-winner as the Outlaws nipped the Reno Silver Sox 9-8...Chico winning their second straight of the four game series.
The Outlaws jumped out to a 1st inning lead when Casey Garrison doubled home Steve Boggs...later in the frame Benavidez drew a bases-loaded walk and Chris Corso singled home Garrison and Lino Garcia to put Chico up 4-0. Reno got on the board in the 2nd when Juan Senreiso singled, stole second, went to third on a Ceriani throwing error and scored on a D.J. Dixon sacrifice fly...the Outlaws answered in the 3rd when Garcia walked, swiped second and third and came home on a Corso single to right...then in the 4th Garrison cracked a solo homer (his third round-tripper in as many games) to make the score 6-1. But Reno used the long ball to tie things up in the 5th - Ross McCoy launched a solo homer off Chico starter Nick Casanova; the Silver Sox then loaded the bases for Ryan Brown, who bombed a grand slam to right to knot the game up at six apiece.
The Silver Sox took what turned out to be their only lead of the game in the 6th when Outlaws reliever Eric Sheridan walked Doug Sanders with the bases loaded, forcing home Dixon to put Reno on top 7-6. Chico went back on top in the 7th when Eric Pringle scored from first when Silver Sox third baseman John Hattig threw the ball away on a Jesse Kovacs infield single; Kovacs ended up at third on the play and scored three batters later on a Reggie Leslie wild pitch. It stayed 8-7 until the 9th...Todd Gelatka came in from the Outlaws bullpen to close it out, but Hattig plated Gary Harris with the tying run on a two-out single to right. Reno reliever Scott Schneider took the mound in the bottom of the 9th and struck out Garcia, but gave up a bloop single to Benavidez...after striking out Corso, Schneider uncorked a wild pitch allowing Benavidez to move to second. That set the stage for Ceriani, who hit a 2-2 pitch down the right field line...Silver Sox second baseman Carlos Madrid tried to make an over-the-shoulder catch, but the ball popped out of his glove and hit the turf...Benavidez scored from second to give Chico the win.
Gelatka (2-2) got credit for the win, with Schneider (1-1) taking the loss. The Outlaws piled up 12 hits on the night, with Garrison, Corso, Ceriani and Eric Pringle delivering two safeties apiece...McCoy went 3-for-3 to lead Reno's 10-hit attack, while Harris and Brown each had two hits in the losing effort. Saturday's win improved Chico's second half record to 2-7 and overall mark to 17-34...Reno dropped to 3-4 in the second half and 21-30 for the season. The series concludes Sunday with a doubleheader, with the first game slated to begin at 5:05pm; Trevor Caughey (5-3) and Greg Bicknell (3-2) will be the starting pitchers for Chico...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
