Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip N.Y., July 18, 2005) - The Long Island Ducks defeated their cross-sound rivals the Bridgeport Bluefish, 8-7 in front of 6,211 fans at Citibank Park on Monday evening. Jason Johnson made a sliding catch for the final out to prevent a game-tying hit by Angel Espada and ensure a Ducks win.
Long Island entered the fifth inning trailing Bridgeport 3-1. After a bases loaded walk, a Justin Davies single and an errant throw by Gary Burnham plated three runs and a Carlos Hernandez RBI single gave the Ducks a 6-3 lead. Long Island scored twice in the seventh to wrap up their scoring. The Bluefish rallied late, scoring one run in the seventh and two in the eighth before Erdos came in and shut down their offense. Offensively, the Ducks were led by Carlos Hernandez who had three of the team's six hits with two runs and two RBI.
Starter Shane Arthurs (2-0) picked up his second win of the season and first versus his former Bluefish teammates. He went six innings and struck out three while allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and five walks. Josh Kalinowski (3-6) took the loss after yielding six runs, four earned, in 4.1 innings of work. Todd Erdos picked up his league leading 19th save of the season in a scoreless 1.1 inning outing.
The Ducks and Fish will go at it again on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Brian Dorsey (1-2) will take the hill for the flock against Bridgeport's Josh Miller (4-5). The game can be seen live on Cablevision (channel 18) with Lou Brogno and Chris King calling all action from Central Islip at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive baseballs courtesy of the Salvation Army. Duck Tales... With a double in the first, single in the fifth, and triple in the seventh, Carlos Hernandez was a home run shy of the second cycle in Ducks history... Not only did Jason Johnson come up with the game-winning, diving catch in the ninth inning, but he was also responsible for throwing out Steve Larkin at home, who represented the tying run, in the eighth... Tony Rodriguez benefited from all three Duck errors, reaching base every time the Ducks committed a blunder in the field... The Ducks stranded just three runners all night, but did not leave a single runner on base before the sixth inning... The Ducks defeated Josh Kalinowski for the third time this season. In four starts against Long Island this year, Kalinowski is 1-3 with a 10.13 ERA... The Ducks have now scored 34 runs in four games in the second half... Tonight's crowd of 6,211, the 29th sellout of the season and 15th consecutive capacity crowd, raises the total to 2,431,010 fans who have enjoyed baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.
