Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - A five-run eighth inning propelled the Bulls to a 6-4 victory over Indianapolis on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of more than 10,000 fans at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. J.J. Furmaniak paced the offense with three hits, including a two-run single as part of the comeback in the eighth. With the win, Durham becomes the first team in Triple-A and second team in all of professional baseball to eclipse the 70 win plateau this season.
Indy jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings off Bulls left-hander Heath Phillips. An RBI double by Alex Presley drove home Doug Bernier who singled to start the game. Presley came home on an RBI single by Brandon Moss. In the second inning, John Bowker was hit by a pitch, advanced on a passed ball and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jason Jaramillo for an unearned run to make it 3-0.
Phillips would settle down after the shaky start, holding the Indians before departing after 6.0 innings of work. The left hander allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking one.
The Bulls got a run on the board in the fifth inning off Indians starter Charlie Morton. With a runner on third and two outs, Furmaniak lined a ground rule double into the Bulls bullpen in right, scoring Leslie Anderson and cutting the deficit to two.
In the eighth inning, the Bulls rallied for five against Indy left-hander Daniel Moskos. With runners at second and third and one out, Joe Dillon was intentionally walked to load the bases. Anderson fell behind in the count before getting plunked to drive in a run and bring the deficit to one. Jose Lobaton chopped a ball out in front of the mound, but Moskos' glove flip pulled the catcher off the plate as Dillon slid across safely with the go-ahead run. Furmaniak added a two-run single to make it a 6-3 lead as the Bulls handed it over to closer Winston Abreu.
Abreu allowed a run to make it 6-4, but struck out John Van Every to end the game and earn his 16th save of the season.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow, game time is set for 5:05 p.m. at the DBAP.
