Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped a 3-2 decision to the Rochester Red Wings Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. It was Rochester's first win against Syracuse since April 26th. With the loss the Chiefs fall to 20-13 in one-run games this season.
Rochester (41-74) pulled into the lead with two runs in the fourth. Brian Dinkelman started the inning with a line-drive base hit to center. A batter later D'Angelo Jimenez turned on a pitch and sent it out of the ballpark. The two-run blast to right was Jimenez's sixth.
After setting down the first 12 hitters he faced, the Chiefs got to Nick Blackburn for a run in the fifth. Jason Botts walked and Chase Lambin singled to begin the frame. After a Danny Espinosa fielder's choice and a Pete Orr flyout, Seth Bynum tapped a groundball to the left side. Espinosa beat out Brendan Harris's throw to second, allowing Botts to come home with Syracuse's first run.
The Chiefs tallied another run in the seventh to knot it up at two. Botts, Lambin and Espinosa all reached base, loading the bases with nobody out. After Orr struck out, Bynum sailed a fly ball to right field. Rightfielder Dustin Martin made the catch but the ball was hit deep enough for Botts to come around and score for the second time.
The Red Wings broke the tie in the next half inning against Syracuse (58-56) reliever Ron Villone. Dustin Martin whacked a triple to center to lead off the eighth. Brock Peterson lifted a sac fly to right, sending home Martin and giving Rochester the 3-2 lead.
Matt Fox tossed a scoreless inning and two thirds of relief for his sixth win. Villone was given his fifth loss. He let in one run over two innings.
Pat Neshek pitched the ninth inning for Rochester to earn his first save. He gave up one hit.
Both starters received no-decisions. Shairon Martis went seven innings for Syracuse. He threw 109 pitches, allowing 10 hits and two earned runs. He struck out three and walked one.
Rochester's Nick Blackburn lasted 6 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and two runs. He fanned three Syracuse hitters and walked two.
The Chiefs will take on the Red Wings again Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse lefthander Matt Chico (5-6, 3.72) will throw against Rochester righty Jeff Manship (3-7, 4.87) in the series finale. First pitch will be at 5:00.
