
Five-Run Eighth Leads Scrappers to Victory

Lowell, MA - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won the rubber match of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners 10-8 today at LeLacheur Park.
The Scrappers brought 10 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning and scored five times to take a 10-6 lead and held on to win 10-8.
The Scrappers have now won four consecutive series leading into the New York-Penn League All-Star Break. With the win, the Scrappers improve to 24-33 on the season, while the Spinners fall to 16-40 in 2010.
Clayton Ehlert entered the game in the top of the eighth inning with the Spinners threatening. The Spinners had already scored two runs in the inning and were looking for more with runners on first and second and two out and Kolbrin Vitek batting. Ehlert got Vitek to strike out swinging to preserve the Scrappers 10-8 lead. He stayed on to pitch the ninth and earned his fifth save of the season.
Jordan Cooper picked up the win for the Scrappers pitching four innings, giving up two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out two.
Jay Broughton allowed four of the five Scrappers' runs in the eighth and picked up the loss for the Spinners.
Cole Cook made his professional debut for the Scrappers and struggled giving up two home runs and four runs on three hits in three innings of work.
One of those home runs was a Vitek two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning to put the Spinners in front 2-0. Lowell led 4-1 after four, but the Scrappers cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs and cutting the lead to 4-3. The Spinners added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 5-3.
It remained 5-3 until the top of the seventh inning when Moises Montero hit a two-run home run to left field to tie the game. The Spinners quickly answered on Bryce Brentz's double chasing home Vitek and giving the Spinners a 6-5 lead.
The Scrappers rallied in the top of the eighth inning loading the bases with nobody out. Montero singled to tie the game. Aaron Fields was hit by a pitch to force in a run and give the Scrappers a 7-6 lead. Mahoning Valley added three more runs to take a 10-6 lead.
Dale Dickerson came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning and allowed two runs in just 0.2 innings. The Scrappers turned to Ehlert, who got them out of a jam in the eighth and ninth innings to pick up the save.
The Scrappers will begin the second half of the season August 18 as the open up a three-game series with the Batavia Muckdogs at Eastwood Field. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
