Charleston RiverDogs News Release
(Charleston, SC) â The South Atlantic League Sunday announced that five members of the Charleston RiverDogs have been chosen for the league's 44th Annual All-Star Game, June 24 in Lexington, Kentucky.
The RiverDogs placed two starters and three reserves on the 26-man roster that will represent the Southern Division in the contest at Applebee's Park.
John-Paul Davis, whose exceptional first two months of the season placed him among the top five in the league in six offensive categories, was named starting first baseman for the South. Davis currently leads the league in runs scored and his 11 homeruns are a career-high for the 24 year-old from Russellville, Arkansas.
The starting shortstop for the Southern Division is B.J. Upton. Playing in his first season of professional baseball, the #2 overall pick in the 2002 June Draft has shown more than a few flashes of brilliance both offensively and defensively. Upton's 19 stolen bases are tied for third in the league and his 19 extra-base hits are second-best on the RiverDogs.
Right-handed pitcher Scott Autrey has been the RiverDogs ace in 2003. Tied for the league lead in wins with eight, and second in innings pitched, Autrey has more than earned his place on the All-Star Team. The Arlington, TX native and former North Carolina Tarheel also leads the RiverDogs staff in strikeouts and has walked only nine men in more than 80 innings pitched.
Vince Harrison was named as a utility infielder on the Southern Division roster. The University of Kentucky graduate and former wide receiver on the Wildcat football team is second on the RiverDogs in homeruns and runs batted in and is third on the team in hits and runs scored. His defense has been stellar, committing only eight errors at the hot corner. The Lexington, KY native returns home to play in the game.
Catcher Shawn Riggans was named the Southern Division's backup catcher. Named Best Defensive Catcher in the Tampa Bay organization by Baseball America, it has been Riggans' offense which has truly shone. Hitting at a .304 clip, the Ft. Lauderdale, FL native has excelled with runners on base. Riggans bats .423 with runners in scoring position and two outs, accounting for 26 of his 29 runs batted in. He is also 4-7 with 10 RBI with the bases loaded.
Rome placed the most members on the Southern Division Team with six.
Charleston will host the 2004 All-Star Game June 29, 2003 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
