Five Pre-Season Questions with Cam Hillis

September 6, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Guelph Storm News Release

Cam Hillis had a breakout rookie season for the Guelph Storm leading to a third round selection by the Montreal Canadiens at the 2018 NHL Draft.

The 18-year-old from Enniskillen, Ont., scored 20 goals and 39 assists for 59 points in 60 games representing the highest Storm rookie total since 2001-02.

Hillis took time during Storm Training Camp to answer some questions and share his outlook on the season ahead.

What did you learn the most from your rookie season in the OHL?

"I think just keeping a positive mindset. I think it's a long year and you don't want to get too down on yourself. Kind of staying even keel and using your resources around you was a big thing for me in my rookie year."

How did it feel to be selected by the Montreal Canadiens in June?

"Obviously a huge honour to share that moment with my friends and family who have kind of helped me all the whole way up. To be drafted by the Canadiens, such a storied organization, an original six team, that was a great honour for me."

What has been the best advice you've received since being drafted?

"I think just to take it with a grain of salt. It's only a number and the hard work kind of starts from here. There's stories of all sorts of players drafted in different rounds that make it into the NHL so put in the work and get good habits now and it will pay off in the long run."

What are your personal goals for this season?

"I'd say personal goal for this season is to become more of a complete player. I want to touch up on my offensive instincts too but become more of a well-rounded defender and help my team out on that side of things."

With a lot of returning talent on the Storm this season, how do you like your chances at a Midwest Division title and championship run?

"I think the biggest thing for our team is kind of finding consistency. We know we have a really strong team this year and we're going to have to stay consistent throughout the whole stretch of things and if we do that I think we have a good shot of being a successful team."
